Occupational Therapy
A child's main job is playing and learning, and occupational therapists can evaluate kids' skills for playing, school performance, and daily activities and compare them with what is developmentally appropriate for that age group. We can address most developmental needs, however our team also has a variety of specialty areas that ensure we provide high-quality care. Our specialty areas include sensory processing and sensory integration; early intervention for birth to 3; feeding for picky eaters; handwriting; and trauma-informed care. To see each therapist’s specialty area see our team.
DEVELOPMENTAL AREAS WE ADDRESS
We draw on our knowledge of neuroscience to understand how sensory integration and sensory processing impacts development and can support any areas that impact your child’s or family’s daily life.
Parents come to us to help their child with skills like:
balance and coordination to reduce tripping/falling or to participate in sports
fine motor skills to help with grasping and releasing toys and to develop good handwriting skills
visual motor skills for writing, drawing and utensil use
self-care skills for independence in getting dressed, following morning and even routines, sleep hygiene and toileting
emotional regulation to develop more productive relationships with parents, siblings and peers
self-esteem
picky eating
WHO WE SUPPORT
We work with a variety neurodevelopmental and genetic conditions, as well general developmental delays for children without diagnoses. We also work with families whose child may have mental health differences, and when there are difficulties in the home.
Common diagnoses we see include: global developmental delay, dyspraxia, dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, Autism, mild intellectual impairments, Down Syndrome, general motor delays, and sensory processing disorders that impact the ability to emotionally regulate or to follow expected every day routines.
We are also trauma-informed and can work with those who have experienced trauma or attachment disruptions.; this can also include recent divorces and support with recent moves to the island.
